The Chief Minister of Assam remarks, "Addressing conflicts between tribal groups, especially in the Northeast, is a challenging task... Many are hesitant to engage in mediation... I believe the situation in Manipur will naturally improve over time... Our focus remains on upholding law and order.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a prominent figure in the BJP's campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, spoke with The Indian Express on Wednesday during a break from his travels to Odisha, Jharkhand, and Punjab, where the final phase of polling is scheduled. Here are some excerpts:
The BJP has set targets of 370-plus and 400 seats for the party and NDA. How many of these seats will come from the Northeast? We anticipate at least 21-22 seats out of the 25 in the Northeast. Assam experienced the most significant impact from the Citizenship (Amendment) Act... There were concerns that its implementation might reignite protests. Why has the response been relatively subdued?... (Because earlier) there was considerable miscommunication. In Assam, we struggled to dispel the notion that Bangladeshi Hindus would migrate and settle here...
Since assuming office (as CM in 2021), we have organized both formal and informal initiatives to allay these fears. Home Minister (Amit Shah) privately informed me that the CAA was inevitable and would be enacted sooner or later, allowing me time to prepare the groundwork. We successfully convinced a substantial portion of the population that the CAA would not alter Assam's demographic makeup
