Four hospitalized after bull escaped Oregon rodeo arena, injuring patrons; bull named Party Bus charged into crowd before being contained; incident occurred at 84th Sisters Rodeo, sold-out crowd present.
Four people were hospitalized after a bull escaped the arena at an Oregon rodeo and charged into patrons outside, authorities said Sunday.
Verified video from NBC News showed a rodeo-goer being charged and flipped by a bull named Party Bus. According to the Sisters Rodeo Association, the bull jumped an arena barrier, charged onto the rodeo grounds, and was eventually contained by livestock professionals at the holding pens.
The arena announcer immediately called for an emergency response.
“A rodeo bucking bull jumped a fence and ran through the rodeo grounds before being secured by our rodeo pickup men and arena staff near the back livestock pens,” the Sisters Rodeo Association said in a statement.
Video footage shows that Saturday's incident occurred at the 84th Sisters Rodeo in the city of Sisters, about 22 miles north of Bend, right before the last ride of the night was scheduled. A sold-out crowd was singing along to Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.”
Two of the injured were released from medical care on Saturday night. "We are grateful to hear that all injured persons are now home," the association said in a separate statement on Sunday.
Deschutes County Sheriff's Office Lt. Jayson Janes reported that three of the injured were transported to hospitals via ambulance, while one was taken in a sheriff's cruiser.
The lieutenant and event organizers suggested that one of the injured might have been hurt while patrons tried to escape from the bull. Some injuries were minor, Janes said.
Sheriff's deputies and private security quickly responded to the breach. "It was contained pretty quickly," Janes noted.
Organizers mentioned that this was the first time such an incident had occurred since their first event in Sisters in 1940.
The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association praised the arena's pickup men for their swift response in containing the animal.
"We are grateful for the rapid, professional response of our arena pickup men, rodeo staff, and local first responders, who were able to prevent the situation from being worse," the association said in a statement.
Party Bus, the bull in question, had competed in the Sisters Rodeo Xtreme Bull Riding event on Wednesday and tied for third in the first round, according to PRCA information.
The stock contractor for the bull, Corey & Lange Rodeo of Moses Lake, Washington, could not be reached for comment. Organizers said the bull was checked by veterinarians and appeared to be unharmed.
Janes mentioned that Saturday's event was sold out, with a few hundred people in attendance.
The five-day annual Sisters Rodeo competition continued with scheduled events on Sunday, according to the organizers.
